Asbestos Abatement & Removal
What is asbestos?
This naturally-occurring mineral has properties that make it a strong protector against heat and chemicals. For many years, asbestos was widely used in the construction, industrial and manufacturing industries for its excellent the properties as an insulator. Electricians also used asbestos as it is a poor conductor and insulates against both electricity and heat. Researchers quickly discovered that, in addition to its insulating capabilities, asbestos was a versatile mineral that could easily be used in many different forms. The crystals become fibres that are long, flexible and easily formed into braided ropes, woven fabric and yarn-like threads. Asbestos fibres were used to reinforce other materials including cement and cotton.
How was asbestos used?
The use of asbestos can be traced thousands of years, to the times of ancient Greece when it was woven into ceremonial fabrics and lamp wicks. During the Industrial Revolution, asbestos was a common choice for insulating pipes, boilers and engines. The popularity of asbestos continued well into the 1980s when it was still widely used as a fireproof and soundproof insulator in offices and public building, including schools.
What are the risks surrounding asbestos?
We now know that asbestos is a carcinogen that poses significant health risks. Studien have shown that breathing asbestos fibres can pose an increased risk of lung cancer. These risks are reduced, however, when the fibres are safely and properly enclosed within a product, such as electrical wiring and brake pads.
Exposed asbestos fibres, such as insulation that has been disturbed, presents certain risk.
